Atlassian Server and Cloud

It’s been a while since I installed a local instance of JIRA and Confluence so I hadn’t noticed that, as of February this year, Atlassian no longer provide server licences for their products.

The good news is that rather than paying $10 a year for a small server licence, you can now sign up for Atlassian Cloud and run instances of both JIRA and Confluence for up to ten users with email addresses on your domain for free. More details can be found on the JIRA landing page. When you select Get It Free, you also have the opportunity to add Confluence as part of sign up, or indeed it will add both for you if you already have an Atlassian account for something like Trello.

The only downside seems to be that Atlassian don’t support custom domains. I’d really like my instances to be accessed as wiki.mydomain.com etc., but that’s not possible. I suspect with customers being forced to move to cloud or buy the expensive “data center” option, there will be more pressure on them to work on that, but this ticket is currently flagged as “future”.

It seems the only option for Bamboo is the expensive data center licence, but these days Jenkins is more than sufficient for most projects.

Edit 31 May 2023: It looks like the ticket has moved on to “unresolved”.
